PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a brighter display in a transmission type or a reflection type. SOLUTION: An upper polarizer 33 is provided at the upper surface side of an active matrix type liquid crystal cell for display 21, and a lower polarizer 34, a liquid crystal cell for switching a display mode 35, a polarizer reflector 43 and a backlight 44 are provided at the undersurface side. Among these, the liquid crystal cell for switching a display mode 35 has electrodes 38 and 40 consisting of a solid image pattern. Thus, not a half-transmission reflector but a polarized light reflecting plate 43 is used in order to bring out a reflecting function. When a transmission display mode or a reflected display mode is alternatively selected by the liquid crystal cell for switching a display mode 35, a display having high optical efficiency can be obtained in both of the transmission display mode and the reflected display mode. |
