PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make arbitrary external equipment whose protocols for data communication are different easily connectable in a programmable display device 3 to which pieces of external equipment 1 are connected via data communication means 2 and which can perform display corresponding to status data stored in the memories of the external equipment on the screen 15 of a display 14. SOLUTION: This program type display device 3 is provided with: a plurality of pieces of communication ports to which the pieces of external equipment are respectively connected; and the setting means of a communication protocol which is common to respective communication parts. On the other hand, a procedure which is consisting of protocol information corresponding to external equipment to be connected to the display device and is peculiar to the external equipment is prepared at a user's side, and the prepared peculiar procedure is provided in the memory of the external device and is made to be replaceable if necessary.
