PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce hot tool steel as the material for producing a hot tool for plastic working, representatively, a die for hot forging in which machinability is high even as annealed or as quenched and tempered, and the reduction in heat check resistance and toughness is less compared with the cases of the conventional ones, thus, the time and cost required for cutting can be reduced compared with the cases of the conventional ones, and the reduction in a die life can be made small. SOLUTION: This hot tool steel has an alloy composition containing, by weight, 0.25 to 0.55% C, 0.10 to 0.70% Si, 0.10 to 2.0 Mn, >0.030 to 0.060% S, 3.0 to 6.0% Cr, 0.3 to 5.0% Mo, 0.01 to 2.0% V, 0.005 to 0.050% Al and 0.005 to 0.050% Zr, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities. It is preferable that <=0.005% Ca is incorporated therein in addition to the above components.
