摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the thickness of a beam-splitting element along the optical axis and to dispense with a light converging element by devising the shape of a half-mirror surface of the beam-splitting element of an image display device using a reflection type image display element. SOLUTION: The image display device is provided with a reflection type image display element 5, which displays an image by reflecting illumination luminous flux, the beam-splitting element 4 which makes the illumination light incident on its display surface, and an ocular optical system 3, which guides an image displayed on the display surface of the reflection type image display element 5 to a pupil position 1, where the eyeball of an observer is positioned; and the beam-splitting element 4 has a translucent reflecting surface 40, which splits an observation optical path and a lighting optical path and the translucent reflecting surface 40 is formed in a curved-surface shape having rotational asymmetry, which gives positive power to the illumination luminous flux from an illumiation light source 6.
