PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector which can adjust projection luminance (or illuminance) without spoiling the degree of freedom of designs of other optical systems such as a optical systems for projection. SOLUTION: The projector has a light source 200, a first and a second lens arrays 320, 340 consisting of a plurality of lenses for dividing light emitted from the light source 200 into a plurality of partial luminous flux, and a plurality of polarized light separation membranes 366 and a reflective membrane 367, and is provided with a polarizing transforming element array 360 to adjust the polarization direction of partial luminous flux. A light shielding plate 350 to adjust a light quantity made incident on a polarized light separation membrane 366 is disposed between the second lens array 340 and the polarizing transforming element array 360. Light shielding plate operating apparatuses 611-613, 650 are provided to operate the light shielding plate 350 so that the incident light quantity is adjusted according to the size of a projection image. |
