PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To project illuminating light of fine color balance. SOLUTION: The illuminator is provided with a light source, a translucent rod for converting light incident from the light source and having nonuniform intensity distribution into light having approximately uniform intensity distribution, a relay optical system for guiding the approximately uniform light radiated from the translucent rod to a target to be illuminated, and a wavelength- converting optical element, arranged in the vicinity of at least one of the incident side face and projection side face of the rod and capable of absorbing the light of specific wavelength range and emitting a light of the other wavelength range.
