PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fracture resistant support structure for a so-called 'hula seal' between a combustion liner and a transition pipe. SOLUTION: A gap between a combustion liner 110 for a turbine combustion device and the combustion liner and the outer cooling sleeve of a cooling sleeve 112 assembly is determined by respective operating temperatures and thermal expansion coefficients. One end of the outer cooling sleeve is welded to the combustion liner. A method for reducing a tendency to generate cracks in the substantially cylindrical combustion liner and the substantially cylindrical outer cooling sleeve assembly comprises a step (a) of determining a radial gap between the combustion liner and the outer cooling sleeve as a function of operating temperatures and thermal expansion coefficients, a step (b) of forming the outer cooling sleeve with a diameter sufficient to provide the radial gap, a step (c) of swaging the end of the outer cooling sleeve to bring the end of the outer cooling sleeve into engagement with the combustion liner and a step (d) of welding the outer cooling sleeve to the combustion liner. |
