PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a trialkali metal salt ofβ-alanine- N,N-diacetic acid in good yield by using an industrially readily available raw material. SOLUTION: This method for producing the trialkali metal salt of theβ- alanine-N,N-diacetic acid comprises a first step of reacting acrylonitrile with glycine or an alkali metal salt of the glycine and producing an alkali metal salt of N-2-cyanoethylglycine represented by general formula (1), a second step of hydrolyzing the resultant alkali metal salt of the N-2-cyanoethylglycine with an alkali metal hydroxide and producing a dialkali metal salt of N-2- carboxyethylglycine represented by general formula (2) and a third step of reacting the dialkali metal salt of the N-2-carboxyethylglycine with an alkali metal cyanide and formaldehyde and producing the trialkali metal salt of theβ-alanine-N,N-diacetic acid represented by general formula (3).
