PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact hand held-type four cycle engine of low total height, capable of completely lubricating a valve system. SOLUTION: The valve system 53 comprises a time governing transmission gear 22a mounted at one outer side of an engine body and connected to one end part of a crank shaft 13, and a cam device 22b connected to intake and exhaust valves 18a, 18e, the first valve system chamber 21a accommodating the time governing transmission gear 22a is integrally connected to the oil tank 40 mounted at one outer side of the engine body 1, a second valve system chamber 21b accommodating at least a part of the cam device 22b is formed on the cylinder head 8, and a pair of oil slingers 56a, 56b producing the oil mist to be supplied to the second valve system chamber 21b and a crank chamber 6a are fixed to the crank shaft 13 over the time governing transmission gear 22a.
