PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a high-purity 1,2-benzisothiazol-3- one. SOLUTION: This method for producing the objective 1,2-benzisothiazol-3-one of the general formula (2) (wherein, R2 means the same as described in the general formula (1)) is characterized by comprising reaction between a 2-(alkylthio)benzonitrile of the general formula(1) (wherein, R1 is 1-4C alkyl; R2 a 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy, nitro, carboxy, or an ester thereof, or halogen atom) and a halogenating agent in the presence of water and a mineral acid.
