PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a liquid crystal projector small-sized by arranging a condenser lens in a lighting optical system of the liquid crystal projector close to a liquid crystal display panel. SOLUTION: The lighting optical system 11 is equipped with an optical element 1 for polarization separation which transmits one of two linearly polarized light beams, having mutually orthogonal vibration directions in the projection light of the condenser lens 44 and reflects the other, a phase shifter 2, which converts the linearly polarized light emitted by the optical element 1 into a nearly circularly polarized light, and a reflecting mirror 3 which reflects the nearly circularly polarized light emitted by the phase shifter 2 toward the phase shifter 2; and the light which is reflected by the reflecting mirror 3, passed through the phase shifter 2, and projected from the optical element 1 is made incident on the liquid crystal panel 51, so as to fold the optical path from the condenser lens 44 to the liquid crystal panel 51 to be short. |
