PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To develop a member capable of suppressing light leakage even when the member is obliquely viewed in a direction deviating from axes of polarization of polarizing plates arranged in crossed Nicols and to obtain a vertical alignment mode liquid crystal display device with excellent contrast in a wide viewing angle and with excellent display quality. SOLUTION: An optical sheet is provided with a transparent layer (12, 14) exhibiting anisotropy of refractive indexes expressed by nx≈ny>nz and having <=10 μm thickness on a side of an optical retardation film (11, 13) satisfying equations Nz=0.1-0.4 and (nx-ny)d=200-350 nm where a refractive index in the thickness direction is expressed as nz, refractive indexes in the plane are expressed as nx, ny, an inequality nx>ny and an equation Nz=(nx-nz)/(nx-ny) hold and the film thickness is expressed as d. The polarizing plate consists of a laminated body of the optical sheet (1) and a polarizing film (2). The liquid crystal display device consists of the vertical alignment mode liquid crystal cell (3) on the both sides of which the polarizing plates are arranged in the crossed Nicols with the transparent layers on the cell sides. |
