PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarization separating element which is capable of detecting linearly and highly polarized light out of high output light and which is capable of displaying a picture by being used with a reflective spatial light modulator and being used as an optical illumination system for the reflective spatial light modulator. SOLUTION: The polarization separating element is provided with a polarization-selectable hologram 3 having different diffraction efficiency respectively for orthogonally intersecting polarized-light components and a prism 13 to which diffracted and undiffracted light is made incident via the polarization-selectable hologram 3. At the prism 13, the undiffracted light is emitted with total internal reflection at least once but the diffracted light is emitted without internal reflection. |
