PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface sizing agent capable of exhibiting excellent sizing effect against a neutral paper having little internally added chemicals. SOLUTION: The surface sizing agent contains a copolymer mixture obtained by mixing a copolymer aqueous solution of a hydrophobic polymeric monomer and a carboxyl-containing polymeric monomer, and a styrene-(meth)acrylic ester copolymer emulsion as an active ingredient.
