In a turbocharger arrangement comprising a turbocharger having an axial flow turbine, a diverter valve 19, is provided for diverting some of the exhaust gas flow from an engine 10, via a conduit 21, to internal passages 35 formed in at least some of the stator blades of the turbine, thereby bypassing the main inlet to the turbine. From the passages 35, the gas passes through holes 36, into relatively low pressure turbine regions located between the nozzle throats, defined between the stator blades, and the leading edges 33, of the turbine rotor blades 34. By diverting gas in this manner, choking of the stator blade throats is avoided while the diverted gas can still do useful work.
