PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for cleaning a tool used to grind and polish easily optical elements such as glass or ceramic lenses without fail nor detriment to their surface shapes or the accuracy. SOLUTION: This apparatus is provided with a cleaning tank 2 that holds a cleaning fluid 3 such as water or an aqueous solution of a water-soluble solvent and an ultrasonic generator 4 attached to the bottom the tank 2, and this method comprises immersing a grinding and polishing tool 20 in the fluid 3 in the tank 2 and actuating the generator 4 to ultrasonically clean the surface 24 of the tool 20. According to this apparatus or method, it is possible to release and remove only the foreign matter, such as sludge or an abrasive, adhering to the surface 24 of the tool 20 due to clogging or the like without roughening the surface 24 and to thereby restore the surface 24 easily without fail.
