The invention provides compositions and methods for promoting apoptosis of cancer cells, and methods for treating cancer. The methods of promoting apoptosis of cancer cells involve the co-administration to the cancer cells of a cyclin dependent kinase inhibitor and an agent that induces cell differentiation. The method for treating cancer involves the co-administration of a cyclin dependent kinase inhibitor and an agent that induces cellular differentiation to a patient. Examples of cyclin dependent kinase inhibitors include histone deacetylase inhibitors, protein kinase C activators, retinoids, and Vitamin D3.
