PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent generating images by each function from being stagnant because of lack of an image memory in a digital combined machine, and avoid a system performance decrease by a compression process as much as possible when images should be compressed by a program using the same CPU as a means for generating images. SOLUTION: When finished images are stored by a certain quantity or a printing process cannot be proceeded by a device error (5-2), the page memory is freed for generating fresh images by compressing finished images (5-4 and 5-5). When images should be compressed by the program using the same CPU as the means for generating images, images are compressed only when the page memory necessary for generating images becomes short so as not to carry out an unnecessary compression process as much as possible.
