PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recorder and control method therefor capable of suppressing waste power consumption and of improving the operability by executing the controlling corresponding to a setting condition of a recording medium. SOLUTION: This recorder comprises a detecting means 1 that detects the setting condition of a recording medium and a control means 2 that can execute setting and/or resetting of a print mode based on the result detected by the detecting means 1.
