PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backlight unit which always has a uniform quantity of light in a light emission and guide-out surface while avoiding complexity of constitution. SOLUTION: This backlight unit has a dish type housing 1 which has terminal parts for joining arranged on its side wall part, plural pieces of backlight lamps 2 which are internally arranged in plane on the bottom surface side of the housing 1 and connected to the corresponding terminal parts for joining, and a light-transmissive plate 3 which closes the opening end surface of the housing 1 to form the light emission and guide-out surface for the backlight lamps 2; and the backlight lamps 2 are internally arranged at different distances to the light emission and guide-out surface 3 or mutual-adjacency intervals so as to make uniform the quantity of light on the light emission and guide-out surface 3. Specifically, when the plural pieces of backlight lamps are combined having different light intensity or color temperature, the distances between backlight lamps having relatively large light intensity or high color temperature and the light emission and guide-out surface are set relatively large or the arrangement intervals of the backlight lamps are changed.
