High altitude linked wireless local loop system and method

A system and method for providing a vertical communications link between a high altitude platform and a substantially horizontal Local Area Network utilizing a novel picobasestation to provide high speed broadband communication services and interconnections to a wireless local loop system. The system and method of the invention include the linking of picocells of diameters of about 5-500 meters which are not limited by "line-of-sight" restrictions and provide substantially horizontal wireless services and free roaming for a variety of wireless devices and connecting those wireless devices from a novel picobasestation to a high altitude platform. The system and method of the invention includes the utilization of ISM frequencies for providing wireless links within the picocells and data compression and frequency conversion for communicating with a high altitude platform having a plurality of cells within its footprint. The invention is particularly adaptable to Bluetooth bans communications systems and wireless devices.
