The edge guard, for a composite honeycomb board, is fitted by application of an adhesive along the edge, using one or more jets under pressure. The applied adhesive is spread by a scraper, so that the open honeycomb structure of the core at the board edge is filled with the adhesive. The edge strip is applied to the adhesive layer to be bonded in place at the board edge. To fit an edge guard, to a composite honeycomb board, the adhesive layer wholly covers the webs (12) of the cell core structure, at the edges of the board. The thickness (h) of the honeycomb core is measured between the outer cladding plates (20,30), and the outflow cross section of the jet is set so that its diameter matches the core thickness. The thickness of the honeycomb core is measured continuously, and the jet outflow dimensions are varied according to the readings. The adhesive layer covers the end edges (22,32) of the outer covering plates. The thickness (d) of the composite honeycomb board (60) is measured, and the adhesive applicator jet dimensions are set to cover the whole board thickness in a continuous measurement and jet diameter adjustment action. The applied edge strip is free of adhesive, especially on the side towards the applied adhesive layer along the board edge. Before application, the side of the edge strip to be laid against the board edge can be treated with a primer to improve adhesion and/or an adhesive. The application of the adhesive along the edge of the board and the fitting of the edge strip are simultaneous and successive actions. |
