PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for compensating polarization mode dispersion(PMD). SOLUTION: The method and apparatus are provided with a polarization controller 3, connected to a differential group delay(DGD) generator 5b to compensate the PMD of a transmitted optical signal. The controller 3 is controlled by a feedback loop, which executes optimization algorithm for optimizing the feedback parameter of an output signal from the DGD generator 5. The optimization algorithm takes into consideration the state of polarization(SOP) of an optical signal which is determined from an output signal of the controller or the DGD generator. |
