PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gas sensor hardly causing a crack or breakage in an element. SOLUTION: In an element insertion hole, through which a sensor element is passed, in an insulator 21, the base end side is constructed of a large-diameter part having a larger inside diameter, while the tip side is constructed of a small-diameter part having a diameter smaller than that of the large-diameter part. A clearance between the inside face of the large-diameter part and the outside face of the sensor element 15 is sealed by means of a sealant 219, while a clearance between the inside face of the small-diameter part and the outside face of the sensor element 15 is sealed by means of a cushioning sealant 218 with a strength of 50-1000 N.
