PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a lubricant composition which exhibits an excellent lubricating performance, and a magnetic recording medium which is improved in service reliability in e.g. travelling durability and weatherproof shelf stability without deteriorating the electromagnetic transduction characteristics. SOLUTION: The lubricant composition contains at least one compound selected from fluorinated monocarboxylic acids having a perfluoroalkyl or perfluoropolyether group and an alkyl or alkenyl group in the molecule, and at least one compound selected from fluorinated carboxylic acid esters having a fluorocarbon or perfluorocarbon group in the molecule. The lubricant composition is contained in the lubricant layer (4) of a magnetic recording medium (10) made by forming a ferromagnetic metal thin film (2), a carbonaceous material film (3) and a lubricant layer (4) in this order on one side of a nonmagnetic base plate (1), and forming a back coating layer (5) on the other side thereof.
