PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording and reproducing system that can enhance the user-friendliness of a server unit that records/reproduces video data. SOLUTION: In the recording and reproducing system that is built up by connecting terminals and a server unit through a local area network in operation and managed independently within a limited range, the terminal generates a reproduction request, the generated reproduction request is transmitted to the server unit via the local area network, the server unit reproduces video data from a prescribed server side recording medium in response to the reproduction request, and the server unit transmits the reproduced video data to the terminal via the local area network. Thus, the terminal can easily and remotely control the server unit via the local area network without the need for direct control of the server unit so as to reproduce the video data and the video data can be viewed.
