PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a Hopkinson bar testing apparatus capable of taking data up to a great deflection range, while taking approximately the same space for installation as conventional apparatus. SOLUTION: The Hopkinson bar testing apparatus 10 positions a test piece 3 between an input bar 1 and an output bar 2 and applies impact to the end of the input bar 1 with a striking bar 5 to test the test piece 3 for impact deformation strength. The striking bar 5 comprises a rod 11 for striking the input bar 1 and a cylinder member 12 coupled to the rear end of the rod 11 and extending to the front end of the rod 11 in such a manner as to surround the rod 11.
