PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical recording method suitable for multi-level recording. SOLUTION: In the optical recording method for recording data by irradiating an optical recording medium 10 having a recording layer 12 on a light transmissive substrate 14 with a laser beam, virtual recording cells 40 which allow a unit recording mark 48 to be recorded with arbitrary unit length H in the moving direction S, are continuously defined in the moving direction S on the recording layer 12, furthermore, the irradiation time is changed at five or more steps with respect to a plurality of virtual recording cells 40. A plurality of recording marks 48A to 48G having different sizes can be formed by irradiating the recording layer 12 with a laser beam in the state that the ratio between the longest irradiation time TL and the shortest irradiation time TS in the five or more steps of irradiation times satisfies the relation of 0.05<TS/TL<0.5.
