PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the degradation in image quality by well removing filming from an image carrying member of which the surface is formed of high-hardness material, such as amorphous silicon. SOLUTION: A polishing member 18 is moved between a photoreceptor 6 and an intermediate transfer belt 16 by a moving means 19 of a polishing means 10 and the moved polishing member 18 is brought into pressurized contact with the surface of the photoreceptor 6 by the intermediate transfer belt 16 when a filming layer formed on the photoreceptor 6 is removed. The filming layer on the surface of the photoreceptor 6 is efficiently removed by rotating the photoreceptor 6.
