Conventional fibre optic switches are large and complex in construction, or only permit simple switching operations. The disclosed fibre optic switch is compact and of simple construction and permits a broad range of switching permutations. The arrangements as 1x2-,2x2- and 1xN-switches are particularly advantageous. At least one displaceable optical fibre is coupled with one of the further optical fibres by turning in a groove of an aligning structure. A switching body serves for the selection of the groove. The grooves are arranged on the surface of a virtual cylinder or cone surface and the switching body mounted so as to rotate around the axis thereof. The switching body and the at least one optical fibre are not fixed to each other. The arrangement is preferably mechanically bistable or multistable and a permanent magnet serves as switching body. Said fibre optic switch is suitable for switching applications in measurement and data technology and in telecommunication. |
