The nonwoven material, with at least three continuously overlaid layers of continuous filaments, has at least one layer of melt-blown fibers on the outer side of the fabric. The layer is bonded to the body of the nonwoven by hydrodynamic needling, composed of layers of spun-bond fibers. An Independent claim is included for the production of a multi-layer nonwoven fabric, where the fibers are formed continuously into a fiber layer and the layers are overlaid. The initial layer is of melt-blown fibers, followed by a layer of spun-bond fibers and a further layer of melt-blown fibers, to be bonded together by hydrodynamic needling. Two or three melt-blown fiber layers can be brought together directly over a spun-bond fiber layer, and bonded together. The fiber layers are laid on a continuous belt, in the required sequence of melt-blown and spun-bond fibers to give the layer order with the melt-blown fibers on the outer side(s). The overlaid layers pass through a water jet station, to be bonded from both sides in a hydrodynamic needling action.
