Washing machine operating method has imbalance sensors for detecting an imbalance of the rotary drum during spin cycle, for adjusting the drum rotation via washing machine programme control. When the laundry is loaded into the drum, material type, laundry weight and required wash are determined, with selective over-ride of the imbalance system for light loads, to allow a spin cycle at maximum rotation rate.
