The method involves changing a filter characteristic in an evaluation circuit when a knock detector output signal exceeds a reference value in a way that can be defined. During a phase in which a change in filter characteristic is taking place a modified knock detection method is implemented, whereby the knock detection threshold is made less sensitive and/or the reference level control is modified.
