The invention relates to a method for activating and deactivating a device connected to a bus in a motor vehicle, whereby the device is deactivated by a software command and is reactivated by a predetermined number of pulses. When the device is deactivated, all components of the device except for existing detection circuits are switched off. The detection circuits are configured either to receive optically or electrically. An optical detection circuit has a photodiode, an integrator and a comparator, whereas the electric detection circuit has a flip-flop and a counter. A device is deactivated, if no useful data is transmitted via the bus for a predetermined period, or if the vehicle is unoccupied. A device is reactivated if user input information exists, or if the vehicle is occupied by an authorised person. The inventive method is particularly suitable for a bus which complies with IEEE1394B.
