A system and method for streaming multimedia content from a server system through a network connection to a client system. The system includes a last-element cache (58) provided as the terminal element of a distributed network cache system, where the last-element cache (58) resides within a persistent data store (54) of a client system, and a cache content controller (56), coupled to the last-element cache (58), that operates as the exclusive local access manager for the content of the last-element cache (58). The cache controller (56) is responsive to information provided by a remote content server system to select a plurality of predetermined content files for storage by the last-element cache (58). The cache controller (56) si also responsive to requests by the content player (50) to select a predetermined one of the predetermined content files for streaming transfer to the current player (50).
