The invention relates to a device for eliminating the malodorous components of flatus and ammonia generated during the use of a toilet, such as a flushing toilet or bedpan, and comprises a chemical converter (100). The chemical converter is for use with a gas handling apparatus (400) for capturing malodorous air, such as through intake ports (402) located at the level of t he toilet bowl rim. The malodorous components are irreversibly transformed by t he converter into non-volatile non-malodorous substances, thereby neutralizing their undesirable effect.
