Fast video encoding method with low power consumption

A method and apparatus is described for the processing of video frames on a block-by-block basis. The method carries out motion estimation, motion compensation and coding of each block before moving to the next block in a frame. This reduces memory requirements. Additional methods and apparatus are described which involve the processing of a series of intermediate frames between a previous reference frame and a subsequent reference frame. Blocks distributed through intermediate frames are grouped into a set and processed as a set. <IMAGE>
