A calcium fluoride precipitate is doped with ions, eg at least one of the lanthanide ions, (preferably Eu<SP>+2</SP>, Eu<SP>+3</SP>, ions of Tb or Dy) or at least one group IIIb ion, (preferably, ions of T1). A method for manufacturing a calcium fluoride precipitate, comprises the steps of producing a dopant solution using a salt of at least a first dopant and a solvent for that salt; producing a solution of CaC1<SB>2</SB>; mixing the dopant solution and CaC1<SB>2</SB> solution with hydrogen fluoride to produce a calcium fluoride precipitate doped with ions of the first dopant. The doped calcium fluoride is used as a phosphor. |
