PURPOSE: A liquid crystal display is provided to suppress the unwanted creation of an after-image in displayed images. CONSTITUTION: A liquid crystal compound having an ester structure or a heterocyclic structure with more than one oxygen atom is added to liquid crystal material at a mixture ratio of more than 10%. A liquid crystal display device contains in a liquid crystal material a liquid crystal compound having more than noncovalent or unshared electron pair or pairs. The unshared electron pair or the liquid crystal compound is readily ion-combinable with another ion while permitting the ion to exhibit sequential conduction from the unshared pair to another unshared electron pair with relaxation of electrical charge carriers being done. Ion's hopping conduction is fast in movement velocity or migration rate.
