PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform good finished coating to have a smooth surface on a woody material to be coated, which has unevenness, crack, worm-eaten spots on the surface. SOLUTION: A coating device is composed of a squeeze type coating quantity control member 1, in which a pushing member for transporting a plate like material 3 to be coated such as a plywood and a pressurizing device are installed, a surrounding member 2 for forming an adequate coating liquid pond between the control member 1 and the surrounding member 2, a coating liquid supply means 5 for supplying the coating liquid 4 to the coating liquid pond formed by the control member 1 and the surrounding member 2 and a coating liquid drying means, and one surface 2a of the surrounding member 2 is arranged in the vicinity of the control member 1 and on the upstream side in the transporting direction of the material 3 to be coated. The coating method is performed by using this device.
