Metal shavings formed during machining are passed through at least one pair of fluted rolls (11, 12) with parallel axes. The fluting tips form conical surface segments so that the fluting in the end regions of a first roll will intermesh with fluting on a second roll, but the fluting in the intermediate region will not intermesh with that on the second roll.
