PURPOSE: To obtain good display performance which is hardly influenced by changes with time or by the voltage hysteresis as much as possible. CONSTITUTION: The device is equipped with a first electrode substrate having a transparent first substrate, first electrode formed on the first substrate and first alignment film formed on the first substrate, a second electrode substrate having a transparent second substrate, second electrode formed on the second substrate and second alignment film formed on the second substrate, and a light controlling layer composed of a smectic liquid crystal material having non-threshold type voltage transmittance characteristics and <= 120 nC/cm spontaneous polarization and held between the first and second electrode substrates. The polar force component of the surface free energy of each of the first and second alignment films is <= 13 dyn/cm.
