PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for endlessly recording a medium by using a recorded area on the medium for a repeated recording area. SOLUTION: The apparatus for recording a compressed signal obtained by variably compressing an input moving image signal at a data rate on a disk comprises an encoder 11 for outputting the compressed signal, a calculating means 12 for calculating the data amount of images of a predetermined number sequentially outputted from the encoder, a navigation managing means 13 for managing the number of the data, a disposition and the like of outputted signals of the encoder, and a file system managing means 14 for managing the flag indicating whether an arbitrary sector on the medium is recorded or not, the number of its recorded pieces on the already recorded area, start positions, size, reproducing order of each of the recorded pieces. In this apparatus, the means 14 stops recording at a time point when the size of an unrecorded area becomes smaller than the data amount to be outputted next obtained by the calculating means after the recording of the compressed signal generated by the encoder is started.
