PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus and method for an original allowing correct and efficient image display at all times. SOLUTION: An imaging apparatus 1 for original having an image sensor 2 comprises a reading means to read image information of the original, a sub scanning means to change a relative position between the sensor 2 and an original image in the direction intersecting at a right angle to the direction of a main scanning direction of the sensor 2 at a prescribed speed, an AD converter 5 to convert the image information from the reading means into digital image data, a memory 6 to store the image data from the converter 5 and an output means to output the image data stored in the memory 6 to a prescribed display device 15. If an object image is a blank paper or an original with plain background, data of the object image in the memory 6 is invalidated.
