PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin film magnetic head capable of greatly contributing to the increase of a recording magnetic field while suppressing an extra leakage magnetic field. SOLUTION: An upper magnetic pole layer 37 is expanded along the surface of an insulating layer from the center position of a spiral coil pattern, and extended toward a medium opposite side 25 while being tapered. In the tip of the upper pole layer 37, a tip magnetic pole piece 39 extended forward with a uniform width along a nonmagnetic gap layer, and facing the medium opposite side 25 in a front end is defined. A trailing side neck height NH is defined by the lengths of a pair of ridge lines extended in parallel with each other on the trailing side of the tip magnetic pole piece 39. The upper magnetic pole layer 37 is expanded in a width direction from the rear end of the tip magnetic pole piece 38. When the trailing side neck height NH is set equal to/lower than 1μm, the increase of a recording magnetic field is realized while an extra leakage magnetic field from the trailing edge is suppressed.
