PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform a background removal which provides an effect similar to one acquired when the smoothing area in the primary scanning direction is extended by referring to pixels which have wider area in the primary scanning direction for performing background level sensing. SOLUTION: An image processing apparatus for reading and converting an original to a digital image signal to which image processing is executed, wherein a digital signal is thinned out at a predetermined interval in a primary scanning direction to form signals thinned out between pixels (20), the signals thinned out between pixels are smoothed out for a plurality of times using a digital filter (21), a peak value is detected within the calculated value of one line in the direction of primary scanning which was smoothed out and the detected value is defined as a background level for each line (22), a calculated value of current line is determined based on whether the detected peak value is higher or lower than the calculated value of the background level of the previous line (24, 25, 26, 27) to perform a background reduction for each line in the primary scanning direction with the calculated value for the background level as a threshold (28). |
