PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To switch an image having non-picture parts on both sides to an optimum picture display size in a wide television by detecting the horizontal aspect ratio. SOLUTION: An aspect ratio detecting means has a vertical and horizontal detecting functions, a microcomputer for calculating the zooming factor according to the output from the aspect ratio detecting means, and a zooming means for zooming according to the zooming factor.
