PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a document image pickup device easy to maintaine. SOLUTION: This document image pickup device is provided with a read means which has an image sensor and reads the image information on a document, an auxiliary scanning means which changes the relative position between the sensor and the image on the document in the direction perpendicular to the main scanning direction of the sensor at a prescribed speed, and a separating and feeding means which separates a document from a plurality of documents and feeds the separated document to the auxiliary scanning means. This device is also provided with a discharging means which discharges the document after the document is subjected to auxiliary scanning by means of the auxiliary scanning means, a drive assist means which assists the auxiliary scanning means, separating and feeding means, and discharging means when the means move the document, and a lighting means which illuminates the document. In addition, this device is also provided with an auxiliary lighting means 25 which illuminates the document by reflecting the light from the lighting means and a device main body C. The lighting means and auxiliary lighting means are detachably attached to the main body C and can be separated from each other.
