PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To furthermore quickly retrieve the recording terminating position when the recording time is very few (when the recorded area is short). SOLUTION: By a system controller 10, a digital signal processing circuit 7 and a servo processing circuit 9 are controlled at the time of retrieval operation of the recording terminating position. The retrieval operation includes: a step for dividing the straight line distance between the last terminal of a track having the recording information and a read-out of an optical disk 1 into the specified number of blocks, a step for moving an optical pickup 3 toward the read-out side from the final terminal at a unit of one or plural blocks and also for judging the presence of the data recorded on the border of a unit of one or plural blocks, a step for continuing the movement of a unit of next one or plural blocks when the presence of the data recording is decided, and a step for performing the normal search operation by taking a border position and a border position preceding it directly as initial values.
