PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress self-discharging of a battery using manganese dioxide and nickel oxy-hydroxide as active material. SOLUTION: The positive electrode black mix of an alkaline battery according to the invention contains as active material, manganese dioxide and nickel oxy-hydroxide in which zinc is included in the form of solid solution. The amount of zinc in solid solution should preferably be 0.7×10-2 thru 7.4×10-2 mol per one mol nickel oxy-hydroxide. Further the positive electrode black mix should preferably contain ZnO.
